Leicester's Chinese New Year celebrations 2022

WELCOMING IN THE YEAR OF THE WATER TIGER,
WITH A RANGE OF EXCITING FREE EVENTS ACROSS THE CITY.

The Chinese, Vietnamese, Korean, Singaporean, Indonesian, Bruneian and Malayan communities will celebrate Lunar New Year in style, to welcome the Year of the Tiger.

 

Cosmopolitan Arts will host a range exciting of activities in the city centre. New Walk Museum will have an impressive lineup of traditional Chinese live music, story-telling, shadow puppets, acrobatics and arts workshops.

 

A dazzling and vibrant procession will start at De Montfort University leading to Jubilee Square before moving through the streets of the city centre and finishes in Green Dragon Square at 5pm. In Green Dragon Square from 5pm there will be a fantastic finale show featuring live Chinese DJ, lion dance, pyrotechnics and fireworks.

Saturday 5th February 11am - 4pm 

Chinese New Year performances & workshops
at Leicester Museum & Art Gallery, New Walk

The stage in the Victorian Gallery will include:

  • The amazing and extremely talented group ‘Euphoria, will perform traditional Chinese music

  •  Storytelling and shadow puppets performance in Victorian Gallery and workshops in The World Gallery, from nationally renowned Ling Peng, a Nottingham based professional Chinese artist.

  • ‘The Chinese Whisperers’, traditional Chinese band from China, who will perform live throughout the day.

  • Throughout the day, there will be performances by ITSWA, who specialise in Wing Chun Kung Fu, Tai Chi Chuan, Praying Mantis Kung Fu, Qigong, and Lion Dance Arts.

  • Amazing professional Chinese dancers and musicians performing traditional and well-known Chinese arts

 

The World Gallery will include workshops:

  • The Confucius Institute will be delivering series of performances and free traditional Chinese crafts workshops including; calligraphy, paper cutting, Chinese traditional games, traditional costumes, and food.

  • Shadow puppets, story-telling and soundscape workshops by professional workshops.

Sunday 6th February 2pm – 5.20pm​ 

Chinese New Year procession from DMU
and finale performance in Green Dragon Square

The procession will start in the grounds of De Montfort University by the Big Screen (near the Queens Building - LE2 7DR).

Travelling down The Gateway, to The Newarke, through Castle Gardens onto Castle Street then down onto Southgates, over to Peacock Lane, through Jubilee Square to the Clock Tower and Humberstone Gate.

 

At 5pm it will arrive for a finale performance in Green Dragon Square. There will be a vibrant array of large-scale beautiful artwork, costumes, music and traditional Chinese dragon leading the procession.

The beautiful and dazzling spectacular finale performance in Green Dragon Square will host well known DJ Guohan Yang from China playing current Chinese music, as well as beautiful pyrotechnics, dances including the famous Lion Dance and a thrilling firework display.

This year we are partnering with De Montfort University, the Confucius Institute and Leicester City Council to deliver these events.

All of these vibrant and dazzling family friendly events are free, so come along to celebrate the Lunar New Year of the Tiger with all the cultural communities who celebrate the lunar festival (also known as the spring festival communities), and learn about their beautiful & fascinating culture - it promises to be a great season of celebrations.
