A new kind of festival for Leicester
Cosmopolitan Arts Festival has been celebrating the wide cultural mix in Leicester through all artforms for 9 years now.
Since COVID-19 is still preventing large-scale gatherings, this year's festival is taking place
online, with artists' performances available to watch via Facebook Live.
We also have a special audiovisual exhibition within the Haymarket Centre in Leicester City Centre, the festival's natural home.
We have booked a fantastic line up this year of local, national and international artists, performing music, dance, acrobatics, pyrotechnics and spoken word. There is something for everyone, as the event involves many different art forms, cultures and genres.
The festival will be broadcast from 10am til 6.30pm on Saturday12th and Sunday 13th, with both days culminating in our dazzling 'Cosmopolitan Spectacular' finale performance, which was filmed recently at De Montfort Hall.

COSMOPOLITAN UNITY PROJECT - 5 cultural group performances
Cosmopolitan Arts are delivering a three-year project working with 15 different cultural groups, 5 each year. We are focusing on cultural differences to find out how these communities feel that they are viewed and treated. We are delivering workshops to create performances that display each culture within the Cosmopolitan Arts Festival, to help break down barriers and promote better understanding and social harmony.
We are also creating a documentary and academic report to help support these communities and find solutions. This year we are working with the following communities: Nigerian, Gambian, Filipino, Gujurati and Braunstone. Throughout the two day event you will see performance from these communities that have been put together during lockdown via Zoom sessions. A big thank you to the tutors and the funder Big Lottery Fund.
COSMOPOLITAN YOUTH PROJECT - 2 performances
During lockdown and extended lockdown throughout the summer holidays, we commissioned professional musicians and tutors, to work with a group of young people from Highfields on a daily basis.
The young people created songs in response to being in lockdown - one is a song with a full ensemble of instruments and vocalists, the other is a rap song with a digital backing track. The participants wrote the lyrics, composed the music and performed.
They also created the music videos and learned a lot throughout the process, including: lyric writing skills, digital music creation, composing, playing an instrument, singing, directing, chorography, filming, editing both music and film. Most of all they had a lot of fun and were kept occupied during a very difficult time. A big thank you to the tutors and the funders Children in Need and the Leicestershire Music Hub, you have truly made a difference to these young people's lives.

Grand Finale Performance:
The Cosmopolitan Ensemble present 'COSMOPOLITAN SPECTACULAR'
Cosmopolitan Ensemble involves some of the very best musicians and artists from Leicester.
We compose, write and create new work, which is a fusion of many modern, traditional and world instruments, blending many genres and styles of music with jazz, with an exciting combined arts approach, using film, animation, light and dance.
This dazzling, spectacular performance celebrates cultural diversity and is an astounding audiovisual treat. This year we have created a response to racism and Black Lives Matter, with fantastic lyrics and vocals from the enormously talented Jafro, the ultimate soulful diva Lisa Millet and fabulous wordsmith Mr Shay.
The finale performance will be broadcast on Saturday and Sunday evening, and will feature animation by Barret Hodgson and dance from Demi Essex. Amanda Leandro is the producer and Art Director.
Providing the diverse musical landscape are:
Adrian Blissett (bass / composer)
Richard Everitt (baritone saxophone / composer)
Andy Price (keyboard)
Malc D'Sa (drums)
Les Hayden (guitar)
Marcus Joseph (alto saxophone)
Gareth John (trumpet)
Hari Trivedi (tabla).
Our music and performance is evocative in delivery, as we want to deliver a positive message of cultural unity and integration. The lyrics speak of the Windrush generation, the origins of racism and why it occurs and what it feels like to be on the receiving end.
Regardless of the subject matter, this is a fully immersive spectacular performance that is completely entertaining and a feast for your eyes and ears.
